This house was the last civil project carried out by the architect Gaudí before devoting himself entirely to his masterpiece : La Sagrada Familia, from 1918 until his death in 1926.

The project of La Pedrera was commissioned by Mr. Pere Milà , who had seen the Casa Batlló (another Gaudí building located in the same avenue ). Mr Milà was absolutely fascinated by his art, so he asked to the Catalan genius to made a similar house for him.

From the very begining though, the relationship between the Milà`s Family and Gaudí were always marked by conflict.

Problems came mainly because of the delay in the works, and because of the changes in the initial budget, constantly increasing.

Façade of La Pedrera

From the imposing mass of the stone facade, that is, the vast undulating structure, is almost imposible to see that is in fact supported on a framework of metal pillars,

This amazing feature is even more impressive if we consider that this innovative architectural solution was a total innovation on that moment in time .

Certainly remarkable are the decorations and floral motives in wrought iron all over the balconies and the entrances of the house.

Not forgetting the roof, with its spectacular medieval soldier-shaped chimneys, with a fantastic ornamentation, based on small pieces of glass and broken pottery .

The interior of the Casa Milà is no less impressive than its external facade : all rooms are completely wavy , curved roofs and stairscases twisting in impossible shapes .

The courtyards are filtering the sunlight through a skylight, using the expressive power of the ceramic tiles and glass.

Legend of La Pedrera

There are many interpretations of what it might represent this impressive building : some people states that it symbolizes the Virgin's mantle, given the extreme religiosity of Gaudi .

Other people however, pointed out that La Casa Mila is a huge snow-covered mountain; or the waves of the sea, based on the white color and the wavy shape of the facade.

In any case , La Pedrera is a clear example of the enormous creativity and geniality of Gaudí , who brought new architectural solutions to any of his works.
