Monumental Bullring

The Bullring Monumental  is located in the Eixample district, right into the confluence of the streets Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes and Calle Marina .

Dating to the early last century , currently there are no bullfights held in it , as in Barcelona and Catalonia's region bullfighting were forbidden a few years ago , considering the spectacle was being cruel towards the animals .

Another Bullring was previously also active in the city, known as Plaça de Les Arenes , located in Plaça Espanya . Currently has become a modern shopping mall.

Since traditional bullfights are not held in La Monumental, here are currently taking place other events such as circus spectacles and concerts .

The Monumental History
Monumental Bullring owes its name to its imposing appearance . In 1914 he opened the first bullring, called then Plaza de El Sport.

Shortly after its capacity was expanded , then acquiring the name by which it is known today , currently holds nearly 20,000 spectators.

Its facade shows clear influences of Moorish and Byzantine art in its decor , which was performed based on blue and white ceramic ornaments . These decorative motifs , often of geometric shapes, contrast strongly with the red brick structure.

It has a covered first floor , where are the rows of lines, the boxes and the stairs, and a barrage without top cover that surrounds the whole.

Inside you will find the Bullfighting Museum of Barcelona, where are set many art pieces related to bullfighting: famous costumes , documents, objects belonging to legendary bullfighters..

Apart from bullfights , the Monumental gone down in history as the scene of legendary concerts, in the 60s and 70s.

The Beatles performed here, on July 3 1965 . Soon after, in 1976 Bullring hosted the first concert in Spain of The Rolling Stones .
