Palau de la Música

Palau de la Música
The Palau de la Música Catalana (Catalan Music Palace) located in the Ribera district of Barcelona, was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1997.

The building is the headquarter of the Catalan Choir "Ofeó Català" founded in 1891 by Lluís Millet and Amadeo Vives. This was a musical institution funded by Catalan bourgeois and industrial music lovers .

This magnificent artwork we owe it to the architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner , one of the leading representatives of Catalan Modern Art, in charge of the the building between 1905 and 1908.

Like most other Modern Art Style buildings , the Palau is one of the best examples of integration of all decorative arts and crafts applied to architecture .

Emphasizes the aesthetic role of heavy structural elements, iron and red brick basically,  combined with delicate decorations : floral ornaments , sculptures , wrought iron decos, stained glass windows and spectacular mosaics.

Currently the Palau de la Música Catalana is a cultural facility accommodating concerts, cultural events, conferences... and is one of the best examples of Art Noveau or Modern Art in the city of Barcelona.
