It is the political and administrative heart of Barcelona. It has the same function on the Roman and Medieval period, and it's still being so.
It occupies the former Roman Forum , where came the two main streets of the colony: Cardo and Decumanus , where took place the most important events of public life .
Also in the same place stood theTemple of Emperor Augustus, from which remain only four columns you can currently see at Paradis St. , very close to the square.
The Palau de la Generalitat de Catalunya , so the Catalan Government Headquarters; and the Casa de la Ciutat or Barcelona's City Hall , are both located in the Square, facing each other.
