Ciutadella Park

Ciutadella Park
The Ciutadella park was built in 1716, it was not a park in the very begining, but the largest military fortress in Europe.

Its construction was done by King Philip V , who wanted to have militarily controlled the city, after a long resistance offered Barcelona during the Succession War.

From the former Military Citadel (Ciutadella) some buildings are still standing, such us the Chapel and the Governor's Palace , housing nowadays a cultural institution called Institut Verdaguer.

And of course , one of the most significant buildings in the park : the former Military Arsenal , seat of the Parliament of Catalonia today.

It was transformed into a pubblic park back in 1888, in the occasion of the first International Fair of Barcelona. Some of the builidngs holding the exhibition are still there: The Hibernacle, The Umbracle or the former Restaurant named Castell dels tres dragons (Three dragons Castle), occupied nowadays by the Zoology Museum

Nowadays is one of the liveliest parks in the city. There you will see a beautiful large lake where  you can rent a small boat; several seating areas; many landmark buildings and some important amount of Natural and Science's Museums .

There are always groups of young people playing guitars or singing; street artists, even jugglers and acrobats...and many concerts are scheduled on summer evenings, as well as children's activities .

Walking through the park you can also access the Zoo, the entrance is located on the street Passeig Picasso. If you want to know more about it , see our section on the Barcelona's Zoo , it will have everything you need to know to visit the zoo and you can skip the line booking tickets on-line.
